Avocado (n.) The
pulpy fruit of Persea gratissima, a tree of tropical America. It
is about the size and shape of a large pear; - called also avocado
pear, alligator pear, midshipman's butter.
There's more to avocados than
great taste. Avocados contain 25 nutrients, including
vitamin C, folate, vitamin E, fiber and unsaturated fats. They
are also naturally sodium-free, contain no trans fats and are low
in saturated fat.

The avocado was introduced to the United States and California
in the late 19th century. The avocado has become an extremely successful
crop. 95% of United States avocado production is located in California
and 80% occurs in San Diego County. Approximately 59,000 acres
of avocados are grown in Southern California. Fallbrook California
claims the title of "Avocado Capital of the World"
There are many avocado varsities; Bacon, Fuerte,
Gwen, Hass, Pinkerton, Reed and Zutano. The Hass avocado is by far the
most common variety and accounts for more than 80% of the
commercial avocado crop. |
